Group exhibition celebrating TPR’s First Anniversary.
Set in the industrial heartland of Queanbeyan NSW, the state’s largest regional city, The Photography Room (TPR) was established in an old painting studio. The high ceilings and abundant natural light made it a great space to work in, as well as to have photography exhibitions.
“The idea for the gallery actually came after I had agreed to rent the space,” says Davey, the gallery’s founder and gallery artist. “In essence, TPR is an artist-run space. We do not receive any funding, public or otherwise. The aim of the gallery is to have a dedicated space in the region to exhibit photography and to make photographers’ works available to the public, for viewing and for purchase.”
Since the opening of the gallery, TPR has presented solo exhibitions by Sean Davey, Wouter Van de Voorde, Spiro Miralis, Robert Agostino and Tim Brook, as well as two group exhibitions (one being a show of works by teenagers from Tuggeranong Valley) and an exhibition of photography books. To celebrate a year of exhibitions here at TPR, the gallery will host a group exhibition of works by gallery artists as well as friends of the gallery. The exhibition will display works from national and international artists.
TPR’s Curator, Laila Kazak is a recent honours graduate of the Art School at ANU and has been involved with the gallery for six months. “TPR is a curated space, meaning that we select which artists exhibit here, and which ones we represent. We aim to maintain a high quality of work shown in the gallery.
“While the gallery is outside Canberra, and even on the fringes of Queanbeyan, we have developed a strong following from national and international photography enthusiasts.”
“I am very excited about the enthusiasm by photographers to participate in this exhibition”, says Davey.
“We wanted to showcase the gallery’s artists at the end of our first year, and at the same time invite friends and supporters of the gallery to exhibit in the show as well; those people who have in some way, shape or form, encouraged us to keep at it.”
